ROME, Italy
Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Dr Mwigulu Nchemba, has held talks with Tunisia’s Minister of Health, H.E. Dr Mustapha Ferjani, on strengthening bilateral cooperation in the health sector.
Their discussions focused on strategic areas, including domestic pharmaceutical production, radiation therapy and the delivery of healthcare through telemedicine.
Dr Mwigulu said disruptions to global supply chains had demonstrated the importance of building domestic capacity to manufacture medicines and other essential health products.
“When supply chains are disrupted, it is essential to have domestic sources of critical products. We welcome Tunisia’s partnership with Tanzania in strengthening pharmaceutical manufacturing,” he said.
The Prime Minister said Tanzania considers local pharmaceutical production a strategic priority for strengthening public health security, reducing dependence on imports and accelerating industrial development.
He said global disruptions, including the COVID-19 pandemic, had highlighted the need to expand domestic production of medicines, medical equipment and other essential health supplies.
The proposed cooperation with Tunisia is expected to create opportunities for investment, technology transfer, professional capacity-building and expanded access to specialised healthcare services in Tanzania.
Dr Mwigulu is in Rome, Italy, representing President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, at an international conference on One Health and agrifood systems being held at the headquarters of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.
